Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom Ballot Measure One Step Closer to Reality in Virginia
Richmond, Va. – In response to yesterday’s election results, Virginians for Reproductive Freedom, a coalition of Virginia families, doctors, nurses, and health care organizations, working to ensure Virginians can make reproductive health decisions free from government interference, issued the following statement:
“Virginians have spoken,” said Han Jones, incoming Campaign Manager for Virginians for Reproductive Freedom. “Across the state, Virginians voted overwhelmingly for leaders who are committed to protecting the full spectrum of reproductive health care in our state constitution. Virginia voters showed that they believe every person should have the freedom to make their own reproductive health decisions – whether it’s about birth control, prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, fertility care, miscarriage management, or abortion – without fear of punishment or government interference. The 2025 election results put this constitutional amendment one step closer to reality.”
In Virginia, constitutional amendments must be passed by the General Assembly twice before appearing on a ballot for voters to approve. The measure first passed the General Assembly in 2025. By electing leaders who have voiced their support for reproductive freedom, Virginians have put the Constitutional Amendment for Reproductive Freedom one step closer to passage through the 2026 General Assembly, which opens in January for a 60-day legislative session. If that happens, Virginians will get their say at the ballot box in 2026 and will decide if reproductive freedom will be enshrined in the Virginia Constitution.
